HAYDN

"Haydn began the work (The Creation), early in 1796 taking two years to complete...He found the task less fatiguing and more satisfying than anything else he had ever written before, because his personal religious feelings were strongly stimulated 'Never before was I so devout as when I composed "The Creation."  I knelt down each day to pray to God to give me the strength for my work.'"

(Butterworth, 1977, 122)
