GOD, THE
BIBLE AND THE SABBATH DAY
The Sabbath was and remains holy time. Transgressing this commandment is as
serious as any other.
Genesis 2:2-3
And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested
on the seventh day from all his work which he had made.
And God blessed the seventh
day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work
which God created and made.
Exodus 20: 8--Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it
holy.
9
Six days you shall labor and do all your work,
10 but the seventh day is
the Sabbath of the LORD your God. In it you shall do no work: you,
nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your male servant, nor your female
servant, nor your cattle, nor your stranger who is within your gates.
11 For in six days the
LORD made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in
them, and rested the seventh day.
Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day
and hallowed it.
Exodus 31:13 --Speak thou also unto the
children of Israel, saying, Verily my Sabbaths ye shall keep: for it is a
sign between me and you throughout your generations; that ye may know that I
am the LORD that doth sanctify you. 14
You shall keep the Sabbath, therefore, for it is holy to you.
Everyone who profanes it shall surely be put to death; for whoever does
any work on it, that person shall be cut off from among his people.
15 Work shall be done for six
days,
but the seventh is the Sabbath of rest, holy to the LORD.
Whoever does any work on the Sabbath day, he shall surely be put to
death. 16 Therefore the children
of Israel shall keep the Sabbath, to observe the Sabbath throughout their
generations as a perpetual covenant.
Exodus 35:2--Six days shall work be done, but on the seventh day there shall be to you an
holy day, a Sabbath of rest to the LORD:
whosoever doeth work therein shall be put to death.
3 You shall kindle no
fire throughout your habitations upon the Sabbath day.
Leviticus 19:3--You
shall fear every man his mother, and his father,
and keep my Sabbaths:
I am the LORD your God.
Leviticus 23:3--Six days shall work be done: but the seventh day is the Sabbath of rest, an
holy convocation; you shall do no work therein: it is the Sabbath of the
LORD in all your dwellings.
Deuteronomy 5:12--Keep the Sabbath day to sanctify it, as the LORD thy God has commanded you.
Deuteronomy 5:14--But the seventh day is the Sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it you will not
do any work, you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your manservant, nor
your maidservant, nor your ox, nor your ass, nor any of your cattle,
nor the stranger that is within your gates; that your manservant and your
maidservant may rest as well as you.
Isaiah 56:4-7 For
thus says the LORD:
“ To the eunuchs who keep My Sabbaths,
And choose what pleases Me,
And hold fast My covenant,
5 Even to them I will
give in My house
And within My walls a place and a name
Better than that of sons and daughters;
I will give them an everlasting name
That shall not be cut off.
6 “ Also the sons of the
foreigner
Who join themselves to the LORD, to serve Him,
And to love the name of the LORD, to be His servants—
Everyone who keeps from defiling the Sabbath,
And holds fast My covenant—
7 Even them I will bring
to My holy mountain,
And make them joyful in My house of prayer.
Their burnt offerings and their sacrifices
Will be accepted on My altar;
For My house shall be called a house of prayer for all nations.”
Isaiah 58:13-15
“ If you turn away your foot
from the Sabbath,
From doing your pleasure on My holy day,
And call the Sabbath a delight,
The holy day of the LORD honorable,
And shall honor Him, not doing your own ways,
Nor finding your own pleasure,
Nor speaking your own words,
14 Then you shall delight
yourself in the LORD;
And I will cause you to ride on the high hills of the earth,
And feed you with the heritage of Jacob your father.
The mouth of the LORD has spoken.”
Isaiah 66:23--And it shall come to pass That from one New Moon to another, And
from one
Sabbath to another, All flesh shall come to worship before Me,” says the
LORD.
Jeremiah 17:21-30 --Thus says the LORD: “Take
heed to yourselves, and bear no burden on the Sabbath day, nor bring it
in by the gates of Jerusalem; 22
nor carry a burden out of your houses on the Sabbath day, nor do any work,
but hallow the Sabbath day, as I commanded your fathers.
23 But they did not obey nor
incline their ear, but made their neck stiff, that they might not hear nor
receive instruction.
24 “And it shall be, if you heed
Me carefully,” says the LORD, “to bring no burden through the gates of this
city on the Sabbath day, but hallow the Sabbath day, to do no work in it,
25 then shall enter the gates of
this city kings and princes sitting on the throne of David, riding in
chariots and on horses, they and their princes, accompanied by the men of
Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem; and this city shall remain forever.
26 And they shall come from the
cities of Judah and from the places around Jerusalem, from the land of
Benjamin and from the lowland, from the mountains and from the South,
bringing burnt offerings and sacrifices, grain offerings and incense,
bringing sacrifices of praise to the house of the LORD.
27 “But if you will not heed Me
to hallow the Sabbath day, such as not carrying a burden when entering the
gates of Jerusalem on the Sabbath day, then I will kindle a fire in its
gates, and it shall devour the palaces of Jerusalem, and it shall not be
quenched.”’”
Ezekiel 20:12-20--Moreover I also gave them My
Sabbaths, to be a sign between them and Me, that they might know that I
am the LORD who sanctifies them. Yet the house of Israel rebelled
against Me in the wilderness; they did not walk in My statutes; they
despised My judgments, ‘which, if a man does, he shall live by them’;
and they greatly defiled My Sabbaths. Then I said I would pour out My
fury on them in the wilderness, to consume them.
14 But I acted for My name’s
sake, that it should not be profaned before the Gentiles, in whose sight I
had brought them out. 15 So I
also raised My hand in an oath to them in the wilderness, that I would not
bring them into the land which I had given them, ‘flowing with milk
and honey,’ the glory of all lands,
16 because they despised My
judgments and did not walk in My statutes, but profaned My Sabbaths; for
their heart went after their idols. 17
Nevertheless My eye spared them from destruction. I did not make an end of
them in the wilderness.
18 “But I said to their children
in the wilderness, ‘Do not walk in the statutes of your fathers, nor observe
their judgments, nor defile yourselves with their idols.
19 I am the LORD your
God: Walk in My statutes, keep My judgments, and do them;
20 hallow My Sabbaths, and they
will be a sign between Me and you, that you may know that I am the
LORD your God.’
Matthew 12: 1-14--At that
time Jesus went through the grainfields on the Sabbath. And His disciples
were hungry, and began to pluck heads of grain and to eat.
2 And when the Pharisees saw
it, they said to Him, “Look, Your disciples are doing what is not lawful
to do on the Sabbath!” 3 But He
said to them, “Have you not read what David did when he was hungry, he and
those who were with him: 4 how
he entered the house of God and ate the showbread which was not lawful for
him to eat, nor for those who were with him, but only for the priests?
5 Or have you not read in the
law that on the Sabbath the priests in the temple profane the Sabbath, and
are blameless? 6 Yet I say to
you that in this place there is One greater than the temple.
7 But if you had known what
this means, ‘I desire mercy and not sacrifice,’ you
would not have condemned the guiltless.
8 For the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath.”
9 Now when He had departed from
there, He went into their synagogue. 10
And behold, there was a man who had a withered hand. And they asked Him,
saying, “Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath?”—that they might accuse Him.
11 Then He said to them, “What
man is there among you who has one sheep, and if it falls into a pit on the
Sabbath, will not lay hold of it and lift it out?
12 Of how much more value then
is a man than a sheep? Therefore it is lawful to do good on the Sabbath.”
13 Then He said to the man,
“Stretch out your hand.” And he stretched it out, and it was restored
as whole as the other. 14 Then
the Pharisees went out and plotted against Him, how they might destroy Him.
Matthew 24:15-20--“Therefore when you see the
‘abomination of desolation,’ spoken of by Daniel the prophet,
standing in the holy place” (whoever reads, let him understand),
16 “then let those who are in
Judea flee to the mountains. 17
Let him who is on the housetop not go down to take anything out of his
house. 18 And let him who is in
the field not go back to get his clothes.
19 But woe to those who are
pregnant and to those who are nursing babies in those days!
20
And pray that your flight
may not be in winter or on the Sabbath.
21 For then there will be great
tribulation, such as has not been since the beginning of the world until
this time, no, nor ever shall be.
Mark 2:23-27--Now it happened that He went
through the grain fields on the Sabbath; and as they went His disciples
began to pluck the heads of grain. 24
And the Pharisees said to Him, “Look, why do they do what is not lawful on
the Sabbath?” 25 But He said to
them, “Have you never read what David did when he was in need and hungry, he
and those with him: 26 how he
went into the house of God in the days of Abiathar the high priest,
and ate the showbread, which is not lawful to eat except for the priests,
and also gave some to those who were with him?”
27 And He said to them,
“The
Sabbath was made for man, and not man for the Sabbath.
Therefore the Son
of Man is also Lord of the Sabbath.”
Mark 3:2-4--So they watched Him closely,
whether He would heal him on the Sabbath, so that they might accuse Him.
3 And He said to the man who had
the withered hand, “Step forward.” 4
Then He said to them,
“Is it lawful on the Sabbath to do good or to do
evil, to save life or to kill?”
But they kept silent.
Luke 13:10-20--Now He
was teaching in one of the synagogues on the Sabbath.
11 And behold, there was a woman
who had a spirit of infirmity eighteen years, and was bent over and could in
no way raise herself up. 12
But when Jesus saw her, He called her to Him and said to her,
“Woman, you are loosed from your infirmity.”
13 And He laid His hands
on her, and immediately she was made straight, and glorified God.
14 But the ruler of the
synagogue answered with indignation, because Jesus had healed on the
Sabbath; and he said to the crowd, “There are six days on which men ought to
work; therefore come and be healed on them, and not on the Sabbath day.”
15 The Lord then answered him
and said, “Hypocrite! Does not each one of you
on the Sabbath loose his ox or donkey from the stall, and lead it
away to water it? 16 So ought
not this woman, being a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan has bound—think of
it—for eighteen years, be loosed from this bond on the Sabbath?”
17 And when He said these
things, all His adversaries were put to shame; and all the multitude
rejoiced for all the glorious things that were done by Him.
Acts 16:13--And on the Sabbath day we went out of the city to the riverside, where
prayer was customarily made; and we sat down and spoke to the women who met
there.
Acts 17:2--Then Paul, as his custom was,
went in to them, and for three Sabbaths
reasoned with them from the Scriptures,
Acts 18:4--And he reasoned in the synagogue every Sabbath, and persuaded both
Jews and Greeks.
